What is it that defines me as a separate being? Is this the same as ego? Is this our self-image? How is the self-image created? What is the importance of our self-image in the world? What is the importance of ego in maintaining health? What is the importance of ego for those on the spiritual path? How am I to work with my own ego? Who am I anyway? \nI have a physical form\, but I’m not just a physical form. I am also a breathing being… \nAll of these types of questions are considered under the term Ahamkara\, which translates directly as the ‘I-maker’ or ‘I-creator’. It is a Sanskrit term that is used extensively in various Eastern philosophies and sciences. \n  \n“The ego is very useful in helping you to function in the world\,  but it’s not very useful as far as deeper happiness is concerned.  The ego is that which separates you from the Reality\,  from the Truth\,  from the ultimate Source.” \n~ Swami Rama~ \nIn this talk\, we’ll reflect on the views from various sources including yoga and ayurveda\, consider the methods of working with ahamkara\, and listen deeply to the teachings passed down to us from our teachers in the Himalayan tradition. \nAll are welcome. \n“Ask yourself who is it that says I?”  \n \n  \nGary Gran\, CYT\, DAy. Gary and his wife Cynthia have been treading the Himalayan path since the late 1970s. They met at the old Glenview Center in Illinois and have served the tradition in various capacities over the years. They are both certified yoga teachers and Ayurvedic educators. They have published more than eighty articles on yoga\, meditation and Ayurveda. They are currently in summer residence in Minneapolis \n  \nTo support the work of The Meditation Center and register you can donate here or make a general donation by clicking on the “donate” button on the “Support TMC” website page.
