SUMMARY:Hybrid Thursday Satsang via Zoom and In-Person: "The Ocean and Its Waves" with Michael Smith - August 4\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Thursday Satsang\nVia Zoom and In-Person Zoom Viewing at TMC\nAugust 4\, 2022\n“The Ocean and Its Waves” with Michael Smith\n 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.\n\nIf you come to The Meditation Center\, we will be showing the Thursday program via Zoom on The Center’s TV screen \nin the Hall of the Tradition. \n6:00-7:00 p.m.: Guided Hatha Yoga with Chris Young – 2nd Floor Hatha Room\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation by Swami Ma Radha Bharati\n7:30 – 8:30 p.m.: Talk by Michael Smith\n8:30-8:40 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n\nThe Ocean and Its Waves\n\nThis guiding metaphor of this talk — “the Ocean and its Waves” — was one of Swami Veda’s favorites\, but I never fully appreciated its profundity until I heard Shi Hong’s lecture at the HYT-TTP Virtual Workshop last March. This talk will explain how this metaphor not only explains the art of “action in inaction” in theBhagavad Gita\, but also relates to the “Four Levels of Mind\,” the “Five Pillars of Sadhana\,” Yoga-Nidra\, the virtues of Silence\, Tattvavalokanam\,” “Quality Movement\,” “Karma Yoga as Hatha Yoga\,” “Sattvic Multi-Tasking\,” “Witnessing\,” Mindfulness\, and how to communicate deeply and effectively in daily life. This talk is especially recommended for yoga teachers and for those aspiring to\nteach yoga.\n\nMichael Smith has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 50 years and is currently a curriculum coordinator for the International Himalayan Yoga Teachers Association. He has also been certified by the Himalayan Institute Teachers Association and the Behram Guard School of Yoga Meditation (an Iyengar-based Hatha Yoga School). He was a public school teacher for 35 years and also a professor of Comparative Religion at North Hennepin Community College. He has edited and/or illustrated several books on yoga and has lectured widely on stress management (the topic of his Masters Thesis) and also on holistic health. His main work has been to transcribe and to get the teachings of Swami Rama\, Swami Veda\, and the Himalayan teachers out to as many people as possible.\n\nTo support the work of The Meditation Center and register you can donate here (suggested donation $15.00) for Thursday Satsang or make a general donation by clicking on the “donate” button on the “Support TMC” website page.

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang In-Person at TMC and via Zoom: Kirtan with Chris Young - August 25\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In-Person at TMC and via Zoom – August 25\, 2022\nKirtan with Chris Young\n\n6:00-7:00 p.m.: Guided Hatha Yoga\n7:00 p.m.: Meditation with Swami Radha Bharati\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: Kirtan with Chris Young\n8:30-8:40 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n  \nJoin us for an evening of kirtan and chanting with Chris Young to celebrate Love\, the ancient traveler. \nJoin Chris in this kirtan\, it being an opportunity\, a vehicle\, to receive an experience of Beauty; a time to drop the worry and the hurry\, set aside the intellect\, and simply be… with people who are beautiful\, in a setting that is beautiful\, and with beautiful music. \n\n\n“Kirtan is a spiritual practice that originated in India centuries ago. The word “kirtan” means singing\, chanting\, and praising the Divine. It is a sacred practice anyone can do; no special training is required. The music does the work for you\, carrying you to a state of tremendous joy and mental clarity…\n\n\n\n…But the most important instrument in kirtan is the voice\,’There is a sacredness in everyone’s voice. It is like hearing your own soul’\, shares Milwaukee-based kirtan wallah Ragani. who leads one of the largest ongoing monthly kirtan events in North America. Your voice comes from within; it is uniquely yours. Unlike an instrument which acts on you\, emanating from the outside in\, the voice acts internally\, emanating from the inside out. When you sing kirtan\, you can literally feel the sound resonating inside you. ‘massaging’ your inner organs with sacred mantras…”\n\n(Kirtan! Chanting as a Spiritual Path. pages 7 and 9)\n\nChris Young was initiated into the Himalayan Yoga Tradition in 2005\, but has been connected with The Tradition in some way since birth\, with his parents being early members and faculty of The Meditation Center in Minneapolis. Chris occasionally leads Kirtan at the Meditation Center’s Thursday satsang\, and helps with some IT aspects of the HYT Teacher Training Program. Chris finds the thread of yoga and meditation that has been taught through the Tradition and its teachers\, and cultivated through practice\, to always keep him returning to his heart’s path – the path of Yoga – and he is grateful to be a part of the local and global communities that are working to further the mission of The Himalayan Yoga Tradition. He is the father of two amazing boys\, he enjoys singing and playing music\, and is ready to help with your ocular asanas through eye-roll-inducing dad jokes.

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang via Zoom: "The Days of Awe" with Daniel Hertz - September 22\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang via Zoom – September 22\, 2022\n“The Days of Awe” with Daniel Hertz\n7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.\n6:00-7:00 p.m.: Guided Hatha Yoga\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Swami Radha Bharati\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: Talk by Daniel Hertz\n8:30-8:40 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n\nThe Meditation Center will be open to view the evening’s Thursday Satsang talk on the Center’s TV screen. \nThe “Days of Awe” are the ten days between the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah is a call to wake up to the urgency of each moment. This period of celebration\, contemplation\, and atonement is somewhat comparable to Lent and Ramadan.  The dates also coincide with the Hindu holiday Navaratri. The relentlessness of the High Holidays– the long days at the synagogue\, the constant repetition of the prayers\, the fasting– wears down our defenses and helps us open to the truth of our lives. We will discuss and explore how these “Days of Awe” have the potential to be a journey of self-transformation.\n\nDaniel Hertz (MS\, BCB\, E-RYT 500) has been on the faculty of The Meditation Center\nsince 1995. He has been giving individual Biofeedback sessions at the Center since 2007. His most recent book\, Everything is a Little Bit Alright: Yoga\, Meditation\, and a Dog named Roy\, can be found at this Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Everything-Little-Bit-Alright-Meditation/dp/1951651294

Shortly after\, in 1981\, he was initiated into the tradition by Dr Arya (Swami Veda Bharati.) He did attend The Meditation Center frequently at that time. Roger has been meditating consistently since then\, although he has broadened his practice. He also began playing kirtan with a group for public events about 7 years ago. Recently Roger joined the Himalayan Institute excursion to the Valley of Flowers and many other great spiritual places in northern India. He is very grateful for that experience and wants to share it with the TMC community.

Swami Rama\nPublished: 13 November 2015 | Written by Swami Veda Bharati\n\n\nOn the First Maha-Samadhi Anniversary of H.H. Swami Rama\nPhone Address by Swami Veda\nThe Meditation Center\, Minneapolis\, Minnesota USA\nNovember 2\, 1997 \nOM! OM! OM! \nThe days become sacred when a sacred being imparts a special grace or energy to the forces in the universe. All the annual cycles of celebration and commemorations are built around those occasions. In our present day society and thinking\, the human being is no longer a unit in the universe; he views himself as something outside the universe\, trying to control the universe as an outsider. This view is incorrect\, we are part of the universe\, the energy and life that flows through us is the same one through whose rhythms and waves\, all the planets\, stars\, constellations\, breath patterns\, respond. That enlightenment is not an individual event; it is a cosmic or ultra-cosmic event. The coming into body of a sacred being\, an enlightened being\, also is not an individual event. It is not something over which only the immediate physical relatives rejoice; it is something of universal importance. It is a universal event. It is beyond the category of the birth of planets. It is said that when an enlightened being sits for his final enlightenment session all the saints\, past Buddhas\, and enlightened ones attend upon him. And thereafter\, his rhythms are not the rhythms of an individual. Those of us who were fortunate to see the Master walking\, who recall at times walking with him and feeling as though we paced together with the universal force\, with some unseen\, unknown magnet – those of us who experienced that phenomenon will never forget it\, because it was not an individual but the condensation\, the convergence of an unknown number of universal forces passing through that particular space\, time\, matter coordinate that we call an individual. \nI’ve said\, “The days become sacred.” Those of us who have been taught to be in tune\, even to a minor degree\, to be attuned to those rhythms\, to the beat to which a master walks\, find that on those sacred days\, certain special waves touch us. These are not the waves of a physical energy\, but rather something happens within the consciousness. We do not realize that it is all synchronized\, that the events of consciousness are synchronized with the events in the universe. Or rather\, to put it more correctly\, the events in the universe are projections of the events in consciousness… (an excerpt)

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang Via Zoom and In Person Viewing at TMC: "Contemplation for the New Year" Recorded Lecture by Swami Jaidev Bharati Followed by a Talk with Michael Smith - December 29\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang – December 29\, 2022\nVia Zoom and In Person Viewing at TMC\n\n“Contemplation for the New Year”\nRecorded Lecture by Swami Jaidev Bharati\nFollowed by a Talk with Michael Smith\n7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.\n6:00-7:00 p.m. Gentle Hatha Yoga with Eric Ness\n\n7:00-7:30 p.m. Meditation Guided by Swami Radha Bharati\n\n7:30 -8:30 p.m. Recorded Lecture by Swami Jaidev Bharati\nFollowed by a Talk with Michael Smith\n\n8:30-8:35 p.m. Evening Prayers\n\nJoin us for a recorded lecture given by Swami Jaidev Bharati on contemplation followed by a talk with Michael Smith on stories of the Divine Mother in the form of Our Lady of Guadalupe and some comments on the art of contemplation.\n\n\n“There is another school called contemplation\, “shravana manana nidhidhyasana.” What is contemplation? Contemplation is to discover what truth is. I am in search of truth. I listen to the sayings of great sages and to the scriptures taught by competent teachers. This is “shravana.” I think deeply about these sayings and teachings. This is “manana.” I systematically go on searching and finally\, I know truth and integrate it into my life. This is “nidhidhyasana.” And I cannot describe it to anyone…\n\n…In the school of contemplation you learn what is truth. Now you want to contemplate on that teaching. Truth in the world is different from absolute truth…\n\n…A few hints for practice. Don’t speak too much. Those who speak too much speak nonsense most of the time. Speak less\, to the point. Reduce\, if you are speaking too much. Be conscious that I will not speak much. Second point\, “Ok\, I will speak whatever I have to speak but I’ll speak strongly and lovingly.” Don’t keep saying “I mean to say\, I mean to say\, I mean to say.” Many people say\, “I mean to say.” It means there is something they mean to say\, that they are not saying. Be straight\, be gentle when you speak. Your speech will be effective. Those to whom you are speaking will know the language\, it will affect their hearts and minds if you speak properly…\n\nSlowly by understanding the great sayings of the sages\, you start contemplating the great sayings\, “I am atman\, Brahman. The atman is within me. I’m not body\, not the breath\, not the mind\, not my individuality but the atman within me is the same Paramatman.” This type of contemplation\, constant awareness\, is very healthy.” ~ H.H.S. Swami Rama ~

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang In Person at TMC and via Zoom: Kirtan with Chris Young - February 2\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In Person at TMC and via Zoom – February 2\, 2023\nKirtan with Chris Young\n\n6:00-7:00 p.m.: Guided Hatha Yoga with Sig Martell\n7:00 p.m.: Meditation with Swami Radha Bharati\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: Kirtan with Chris Young\n8:30-8:40 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n  \nJoin us for an evening of kirtan and chanting with Chris Young to celebrate Love\, the ancient traveler.

Those who attend the Sunday Morning Book Study received an advanced copy to read\, and they realize what a profoundly wise and inspirational book it is.\n\nThere is a prayer Swami Veda sometimes quoted in his talks at The Meditation Center:\n\nMay the wicked become good.\nMay the good become enlightened.\nMay the enlightened ones enlighten others.\n\nMany of us have been contemplating these things. We wonder: “What can one do to make the wicked become good?” “How do the good become enlightened?” “What do the enlightened ones do to enlighten others?” Signs of Spiritual Progress\, answers those questions.\n\nIt is a compilation of some of Swami Veda’s most intimate talks in which he shares insights from his own inner explorations — “I am speaking to you out of my personal self-experiments.”\n\nSigns of Spiritual Progress is filled with various practices to refine one’s personality and “polish our egos.” — “Remove the dust from the clean\, clear mirror of your mind and all your problems will be solved. Then the Yamas and Niyamas will develop automatically.”\n\nIn this path of self-effacement\, quietude\, and inner stillness\, how far can the honing-down and polishing go?\n\nMaybe all the way.\n\nThis Thursday Michael will share some of his recent understandings of Swami Veda teachings in relation to Signs of Spiritual Progress.

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang via Zoom and In-Person Viewing: "A Tribute to Swami Veda's 90th Birthday" with Swami Ritavan Bharati - March 23\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang via Zoom and In-Person Viewing – March 23\, 2023\n\n“A Tribute to Swami Veda’s 90th Birthday”\nwith Swami Ritavan Bharati\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m.\n6:00-7:00 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Eric Ness\n\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Swami Ritavan Bharati\n\n7:30-8:30 p.m.:” Commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of Swami Veda’s Birthday”\nwith Swami Ritavan Bharati\n\n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n\n8:40 p.m.: Snacks\n\n\nSwami Veda Bharati 90th Birthday tribute 24 March 2023 is a remembrance and marks the beginning of an era. We all cherish and embrace the loving sentiments Swami Veda shared saying: “Tonight you filled me with such love. Everything that you have given me tonight\, I will keep it filled inside me. But I have one desire yet unfulfilled. If you really wish to honor me\, wish to love me\, do two things for me. This\, I am saying to my students. First\, love each other. You all love this Swami\, but you don’t love each other. If you want to love me\, love each other. Secondly\, make yourself adhikarin so that the knowledge coming down from thousands of years of tradition can be passed on and can continue.\n\nAnd the third condition\, if you want to love me\, meditate. That is our true relationship. Silent love is the best love in the universe. And my master\, Swami Rama said “Love is the Lord of All.” And today you have shown that love. But I would be happy when you show that love to each other. I thank you all\, thank you all from the depth of my heart. God bless you.”\n\nOn Thursday join Swami Ritavan in recalling the life and teachings of Swami Veda. He will also introduce the beginning of an era called: Transitions in Transformation – Entering our Decade of Sanctity: 2023-2033. Swamiji’s message describes the process and purpose of Transitions and Transformation\, and invites all to engage in listening to the inner call of the self.\n\nSwami Rama has said in “Sadhana\, the Path to Enlightenment”\, that when a person is on the path of self-transformation (Sadhana)\, she/he comes in touch with the higher potentials within.

It lays stress on the words Yuktahar viharasya – eating and living as they should be done. By simply studying one’s own capacity and learning how to regulate one’s dietary habits\, external activities\, and thinking process\, it is possible for one to gain control over his life and remain healthy. This does not mean that one must do anything unnatural or impossible; there need not be restrictions\, but given the information in these lessons\, one can decide what is best for himself\, and implement whatever changes he chooses\, practicing them according to his own capacity.” – Swami Rama\, A Practical Guide to Holistic Health\, pp. 5-6\n\n	\n\n\nGary Gran CYT\, DAy. is a certified yoga teacher and Ayurvedic practitioner trained in the Himalayan tradition since the 1970s. In our constant search for food\, we often overlook the impact of food on our energy level. In this session\, we’ll expand our concept of mindful eating and take a close look at the sattvic diet favored by yogis.\n\n	\n\n\n\n“When eaten in a regular and balanced manner\, when not overeaten\, food is a source of energy. Overindulgence in food de-energizes us. Food eaten in moderate amounts leaves less residue to block the energy channels of the body. One of the most debilitating and de-energizing factors causing inertia is the residue of foods left in the body which are not properly assimilated or cleaned out. Irregular eating\, constant nibbling and eating between meals do not allow the system sufficient time to rest\, assimilate and clean house. Sometimes it appears quite weak. Sometimes it appears even lost. But let’s see if right now\, here\, as you’re feeling the physical temple [while] sitting\, as you’re feeling the prana and the breath cleansing and nourishing this temple\, cleaning it — as your thoughts are allowed to go\, whatever they are\, good or bad doesn’t matter\, and the mantra somewhere is roaming around there too\, reverberating in the inner temple in the sanctuary — that right here\, in the depth\, in the core of being itself\, this Light is.\n\nAs Swami Veda said in the title of the book that we all shared\, [in] many languages\, the poem of his\, it is like ten thousand suns. And even if you feel it right now just a little — like a little flame\, something is whispering\, something is calling you\, like a little Deepak in your heart — can you be with it right now? Can you be in awe of it? Can you hold it in as best as you can in your awareness right now\, as the most precious thing that is? But it is not even a “thing” — please forgive my language. It is not whatever; [it is] the most precious existence!
