After the first seven days of lectures and workshops\, Swamiji detailed what he called his ‘package deal’ in the lecture entitled “Awakening the Dormant Fire & Leading it to the 1000-Petalled Lotus” on 7.31.86. The ‘package deal’ was a systematic summary of all the teachings presented during the seminar\, with step-by-step instructions on how to follow the path of fire & light. Please join us as we share the contents of this valuable teaching. There will be plenty of quotes from Swamiji to inspire us. All are welcome. \nGary Gran\, CYT\, DAy.  was in attendance at the seminar and will be sharing the teachings from his personal notes. DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In-Person and Via Zoom  – August 17\, 2023\n“The Universal Language of Emotions” with Joann Huff\n7:00-8:30 p.m. CDT\nNote: New Ongoing Time Change to Thursday’s\nGentle Hatha Drop-In Class…begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 6:45 p.m.\n\n\nNew Time – 5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Susan Guthrie\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Emilio Bettagli0\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: “The Universal Language of Emotions” with Joann Huff\n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n8:40 p.m.: Snacks\nJoin Joann Huff this Thursday for a discussion regarding the language of emotions.\n\nJoann states\, “Emotions are like a universal language and we all speak this language. Almost everyone can all understand sadness\, fear\, curiosity\, and joy. Out of balance and I will say things I regret\, self sabotage\, and avoid being my best. However emotions can also inspire\, motivate\, and nurture feelings of joy. They can encourage me to do things I want to do\, learn about myself\, and inspire me to continue on the path. Let’s explore the energy of emotions and see if we can discover ways to work with this universal language in positive ways. I invite you to discuss the energy of emotions with me.”\n\nTo support the work of The Meditation Center and register you can donate here (suggested donation $15.00) for Thursday Satsang or make a general donation by clicking on the “donate” button on the “Support TMC” website page.

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang In-Person and Via Zoom: "The Yamas\, Five Pearls of Raja Yoga\, the Foundation of the Royal Path " with Dr. Stephen Parker (Stoma) Psy.D.\, 500-RYT - September 14\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In-Person and Via Zoom – September 14\, 2023\n“The Yamas\, Five Pearls of Raja Yoga\, the Foundation of the Royal Path “\nwith Dr. Stephen Parker (Stoma) Psy.D.\, 500-RYT\n7:00-8:30 p.m. CDT\n  \nNew Time – 5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Lori Beron\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation\nwith Dr. Stephen Parker (Stoma) Psy.D.\, 500-RYT\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: The Yamas\, Five Pearls of Raja Yoga\, the Foundation of the Royal Path “\nwith Dr. Stephen Parker (Stoma) Psy.D.\, 500-RYT\n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n8:40 p.m.: Snacks\n  \nJoin us on tonight for a talk with Stoma regarding the Yamas\, the first rung of Raja Yoga\, the Royal Path\, also known as Astanga Yoga\, the 8-limbed Yoga\, and their importance as guidelines for our lives in creating a yogic approach to living. This foundation in understanding the yamas assists us in choosing right attitudes in thought\, speech\, and action towards others with whom we are in relationship. \n“…Yamas may be translated as “ethical restraint.” This is because the first of these attitudes is ahimsa (nonharm\, nonviolence)\, and the other four yamas are extensions of that attitude. There must be someone or something towards which we practice the yamas\, so they are intrinsically relational… \n…Whenever Patanjali makes a list in the sutras\, the order of the items on the list is significant. So it means something that he has placed the work with yama and niyama first and second in the process of moving towards Self-realization. As if that were not enough\, he explicitly highlights the importance of relationship in sutra II.31. He states that the principles of the yamas apply ‘ at all times\, in all conditions\, at all levels of practice and attainment.’ From beginning to end\, Yoga is about relationship… \n(From Clearing the Path\, The Yoga Way to a Clear & Pleasant Mind: Patanjali\, Neuroscience\, and Emotion\, pages 87-88 written by Stephen Parker\, PsyD). \n  \n“The Yamas are five restraints which regulate one’s relationship with other beings. They are Ahimsa or non-violence\, Satya or truthfulness\, Asteya or non-stealing\, Brahmacharya or abstinence from sensual indulgence and Aparigraha or non-possessiveness…”  \n(From Lectures on Yoga\, Practical Lessons on Yoga by Swami Rama\, pages 17–19. This book was later published with the title The Royal Path\, Practical Lessons on Yoga.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang with In-Person Viewing at TMC and via Zoom:\nIn remembrance\nViewing of the Recorded Talk\n“Love in the Yoga Sutra\, Where is It?”\npresented by Salvatore Zambito on June 17\, 2021.\nIn remembrance\n October 19\, 2023\n  \n5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Susan Guthrie \n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Swami Radha Bharati \n7:30-8:30 p.m.: Viewing of the Recorded Talk “Love in the Yoga Sutra\, Where is It?” \npresented by Salvatore Zambito on June 17\, 2021. \n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers \n8:40 p.m.: Snacks \n\n	\n\n“A Loving Tribute to Salvatore from Stoma”\nSalvatore was a great student of the yoga-sutras and his writings\, “The Unadorned Thread” and the “Yoga Sutras Dictionary” are both very helpful tools for going deeper into your understanding of the fine points of the sutras. He was a sadhaka who well understood the continual attention of the siddhas upon genuine sadhakas. He once went to an astrologer to have his chart done. After their conversation about the chart\, the astrologer told him that while they were talking there were five subtle beings sitting around him. “Who were they?” Salvatore had no awareness of them but he understood that these were undoubtedly the siddhas that attend upon sincere practitioners who have established asteya\, non-stealing\, in their personality. By non-stealing\, Patanjali means the continual re-evaluation of what is mine that we go through as we grow. As less and less becomes mine\, we become more and more generous. That generosity of heart is answered by the silent gaze of the siddhas of the lineage and the help they bring in moments when we are moving in harmony with our dharma. Bask in the warmth of that light\, wise brother. \n\n	\n\n\n“Love in the Yoga Sutras”\nAfter thanking Salvatore for presenting his beautiful June 17\, 2021 Thursday Satsang lecture\, “Love in the Yoga Sutras\,” Salvatore responded. \n“… In about 1984 I had a lengthy conversation with a Tibetan rinpoche. One of the areas he shared was an understanding that universes emerge from a thematic intention\, mostly Will\, Love and Wisdom\, and Active Intelligence. It was his contention that this is a Love-Wisdom universe\, hence the loving wisdom nature of our great spiritual leaders…” \nSalvatore exemplified this loving wisdom nature in his teachings and presence. Thank you\, Salvatore\, for being an expression of this Love-Wisdom for us in this realm. \nTo learn more regarding Salvatore’s life’s work read his bio here courtesy of The Yoga Sutras Institute \n\n	\n\n\n“Something Swamiji Said”\nby Four Sadhakas\n“Salvatore’s Story”\n“One cool\, sunny afternoon in Boise\, I was driving Swamiji\, in his previous incarnation as Pandit Arya\, to our next engagement. He turned to me and I heard him say\, “So what!?” \nI glanced at him quizzically and after a pause\, he continued\, “ ‘So what’ may be the most important question a teacher is ever required to answer and students are always within their rights to ask it. Actually\, it is the duty of a student to determine the applicability of the material under consideration. If you can’t answer that question\, you simply don’t know where you are going with the presentation. Consider empowering your students to ask\, “So what?” at any time. It will serve to keep you alert and they may enjoy themselves.” \nI followed Panditji’s advice at the next class at Boise State. From then on students would challenge me with\, “So what?\,” often quite unexpectedly\, and we had great times together exploring why anything I said might matter. On a couple of occasions I had to admit that what I was saying probably didn’t matter\, at least not very much\, but I enjoyed the topic. The students were satisfied with the honesty of the reply and\, good-humoredly\, joined in with me. \nOn a little expanded scale\, I find myself often asking\, “So what?” in the widest variety of human activities. It has served as an unusually effective focus for self-witnessing of habitual response and deepening emotional stability as inappropriate reactions come to be seen clearly and fresh action taken – or not taken. \nOf course\, I still invite students to challenge me with “So what?” I never know what I’ll learn from their inquiry!” \nThank\, you\, Swamiji. \n– Salvatore Zambito \nCourtesy of AHYMSIN.org. SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang In Person and Via Zoom : "Sutras of Remembrance and Life Lessons" with Paul Emerson PhD - November 2\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In Person and Via Zoom\nNovember 2\, 2023\n“Sutras of Remembrance and Life Lessons”\nwith Paul Emerson PhD\n  \nNew Time – 5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Chris Young\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Swami Radha Bharati\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: “Sutras of Remembrance and Life Lessons”\nwith Paul Emerson PhD\n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n8:40 p.m.: Snacks\nThe leaves fall\, the day darkens and there is the hint of cold in the air. The plentitude of summer gives way to autumn. Everything passes. November 1st is dedicated to the saints but for most of us who aren’t as privileged to know that many saints\, Nov 2\, All Souls Day\, is perhaps more meaningful. We think of those whom we have known who have passed. And of course there is also some self reflection in the process. In fact if one thinks broadly about yoga\, it becomes obvious that it is based on an educational paradigm or process much as Buddhism and many of the more mystical traditions. You are given the opportunity to learn\, “take the test” and more often than not “retake the test”. So from time to time it is useful to contemplate what we have learned and perhaps even to summarize it in a sentence or two. We’ll spend some time looking at a few examples of how this might be done and discuss our own life sutras. \nPaul Emerson is a biomedical engineer with a Ph.D. He is the authority on the physiology of breathing for The Meditation Center and has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. Paul has worked as a research scientist\, has been a manager of clinical research with a major biomedical company and a university instructor. In addition\, he holds eight patents in the areas of dialysis and sleep therapy. he is a scholar of ancient yoga texts. Paul was certified by the Rockford School of Yoga and began teaching in 1975.

Swami Rama\nPhone Address by Swami Veda\nThe Meditation Center\, Minneapolis\, Minnesota USA\nNovember 2\, 1997 \nOM! OM! OM! \nThe days become sacred when a sacred being imparts a special grace or energy to the forces in the universe. All the annual cycles of celebration and commemorations are built around those occasions. In our present day society and thinking\, the human being is no longer a unit in the universe; he views himself as something outside the universe\, trying to control the universe as an outsider. This view is incorrect\, we are part of the universe\, the energy and life that flows through us is the same one through whose rhythms and waves\, all the planets\, stars\, constellations\, breath patterns\, respond. That enlightenment is not an individual event; it is a cosmic or ultra-cosmic event. The coming into body of a sacred being\, an enlightened being\, also is not an individual event. It is not something over which only the immediate physical relatives rejoice; it is something of universal importance. It is a universal event. It is beyond the category of the birth of planets. It is said that when an enlightened being sits for his final enlightenment session all the saints\, past Buddhas\, and enlightened ones attend upon him. And thereafter\, his rhythms are not the rhythms of an individual. Those of us who were fortunate to see the Master walking\, who recall at times walking with him and feeling as though we paced together with the universal force\, with some unseen\, unknown magnet – those of us who experienced that phenomenon will never forget it\, because it was not an individual but the condensation\, the convergence of an unknown number of universal forces passing through that particular space\, time\, matter coordinate that we call an individual. \nI’ve said\, “The days become sacred.” Those of us who have been taught to be in tune\, even to a minor degree\, to be attuned to those rhythms\, to the beat to which a master walks\, find that on those sacred days\, certain special waves touch us. These are not the waves of a physical energy\, but rather something happens within the consciousness. We do not realize that it is all synchronized\, that the events of consciousness are synchronized with the events in the universe. Or rather\, to put it more correctly\, the events in the universe are projections of the events in consciousness… (an excerpt)

SUMMARY:Thursday Satsang In Person and Via Zoom: "What is Mauna Amavasya on February's New Moon Day" with Swami Ma Radha Bharati and Emilio Bettaglio\, February 8\, 2024 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Satsang In Person and Via Zoom – February 8\, 2024\n“What is Mauna Amavasya on February’s New Moon Day”\nwith Swami Ma Radha Bharati and Emilio Bettaglio\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m.\n  \n5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Sunita Gangopadhyay \n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation with Swami Ma Radha Bharati \n7:30-8:30 p.m.: “What is Mauna Amavasya on February’s New Moon Day \nwith Swami Ma Radha Bharati and Emilio Bettaglio \n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers \n8:40 p.m.: Snacks \nWe are continuing with the spiritual theme of Silence for the month of February 2024\,  Join Swami Ma Radha and Emilio as they discuss the practice of silence called “Mauna Amavasya” during the new moon day of February 2024. \nSwami Radha and Emilio will read more passages from Swami Veda’s profound writings on silence. Between readings we will show the last three 2007 Dunrovin video clips  of Swami Veda speaking on the topic of silence and its purpose.  \nThere will be time for discussion. Bring your questions on Thursday regarding the practice of silence that you always wanted to ask. \n\nMauna Amavasya (Silence Day) is an annual observance. The observation of Silence Day is a practice that Swami Veda Bharati invited us to practice.\n\nSwami Veda has said – “…I would like many of my friends to set aside at least one day to share the silence with me just as you have shared the full moon day for an hour each month for more than a decade now.\n\nIf you plan from now\, you can arrange your worldly affairs in such a way that they do not interfere with your one-day vow of silence.\n\nOn that day\, no driving (except for emergencies)\, no TV\, no conversation\, just self-observation\, contemplation\, japa and learning (1) to give love in silence while (2) learning to love silence.”\n\nBy way of this period of mauna and reflection\, please read and listen to this short address given by Swami Veda in 2010 in California.  Such a reminder will return you to the innocence and purity of stillness and silence. Honor that sentiment of love this week\, and receive the blessings of the Lineage\, with gratitude\, srb.\n\nMessage from “Mauna Amavasya\, Silence Day – February 11\, 2021.” Courtesy of AHYMSIN.org\n\n______________________________\n\n“Oneness in Silence”\nAsilomar-Contemplative Alliance Conference\nMonterey\, California – October 11\, 2010\nSwami Veda Bharati\n(an excerpt)\n\n“…In such silence a field of divine unity is experienced which is not a unification of many parts but parts exist in that one infinite field. For thousands of years many traditions have taught systematic methods as to how to enter this interior ekanta\, solitudinous silence.\n\nIn my ashram we have people who do ten days of silence\, forty days of silence\, ninety days of silence\, but it is done methodically\, and is scientifically guided. In that silence sooner or later the true face of God makes its appearance. It is not a face with features. It may be\, as described by Arjuna\, the light of ten thousand suns shining simultaneously in the sky.\n\nIn our interior sky which is more minute than the minutest atomic particle\, and\, more expansive than all the expansive space. All within us becomes filled with that light\, with that noor\, with that jyotih of which the Vedas have recited\, of which the “Quran” has spoken\, of which the Christian saints have sung hymns and psalms…”\n\nRead or listen to the entire talk here.

The word “kirtan” means singing\, chanting\, and praising the Divine. It is a sacred practice anyone can do; no special training is required. The music does the work for you\, carrying you to a state of tremendous joy and mental clarity…\n\n…But the most important instrument in kirtan is the voice\,’There is a sacredness in everyone’s voice. It is like hearing your own soul’\, shares Milwaukee-based kirtan wallah Ragani. who leads one of the largest ongoing monthly kirtan events in North America. Your voice comes from within; it is uniquely yours. Unlike an instrument which acts on you\, emanating from the outside in\, the voice acts internally\, emanating from the inside out. When you sing kirtan\, you can literally feel the sound resonating inside you. ‘massaging’ your inner organs with sacred mantras…”\n(Kirtan! Chanting as a Spiritual Path\, pages 7 and 9)

DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Thursday Satsang In Person Viewing at TMC and via Zoom – March 28\, 2024\n“Commentary on The Book of Revelation”\nwith Gary Gran CYT\, DAy\n7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.\n\n	\n\n\n5:30-6:45 p.m.: Gentle Hatha Yoga with Eric Ness\n7:00-7:30 p.m.: Guided Meditation by Swami Ma Radha Bharati\n7:30-8:30 p.m.: “Commentary on the Book of Revelation” with Gary Gran CYT\, DAy\n8:30 p.m.: Evening Prayers\n8:40 p.m.: Snacks\n\n\nThe rich imagery found in the last book of the Christian Bible has been interpreted and reinterpreted over the years through many lenses\, including various literal\, artistic\, symbolic\, and spiritual interpretations. \nIn 1982\, at the old Glenview Center of the Himalayan Institute\, Swami Rama gave a powerful commentary on the text from the yogic point of view. He described the Revelation or Apocalypse of John as a complete guidebook to the spiritual journey\, as one crosses the threshold from the rational mind to the unconscious mind and beyond to the eternal. It represents the highest initiation possible for mankind. \nPlease join us to hear the words that Swamiji spoke as we open and read from the Book of Revelation. All are welcome. \nJesus: “Those who have ears to hear\, let them hear.” \nSwami Rama: Revelation is “a universal revelation for humankind.” \nSwami Veda: “Revelation is a parable of the spiritual journey and the process of breakthrough and transformation. The passage from one ground to the next is often accompanied by a trial or tribulation. This passage could be from waking to sleeping\, waking to meditation\, living to dying\, or epoch to epoch…” \n\n\n	\n\n\nGary Gran\, CYT\, DAy.  was in attendance at the 1982 seminar and will be sharing the teachings from his personal notes. He and his wife Cynthia have been treading the Himalayan path since the late 1970s. They met at the old Glenview Center in Illinois and have served the tradition in various capacities over the years. They are both certified yoga teachers and Ayurvedic educators. They have published more than eighty articles on yoga\, meditation and Ayurveda. He said: Why not become fire?” \nQuotes from St. Teresa of Avila: \n“It is foolish to think that we will enter heaven without entering into ourselves.” \n“Let nothing disturb you\, nothing frighten you\, all things are passing\, God is unchanging. Patience gains all; nothing is lacking to those who have God: God alone is sufficient.” \n“The important thing is not to think much\, but to love much.” \n“It is love alone that gives worth to all things.” \nQuote from Jakob Bohme: \nThe virtue of Love is nothing and all\, or that Nothing visible out of which All Things proceed. Its power is through All Things; its height is as high as God; its greatness is as great as God. \nQuote from Hildegard of Bingen: \n“There is the music of Heaven in all things.” \n\n	\n\n\nDr. Stephen Parker was initiated in the Himalayan Yoga tradition by Swami Veda Bharati and was given the initiate name Stoma in 1971. Among the first teachers certified by the Himalayan International Teachers’ Association\, H.I.T.A.\, he began teaching hatha yoga in 1974. A member of the International Association of Y.T.\, he serves on the faculties of the Meditation Center in Minneapolis and the Sadhaka Gram ashram in Rishikesh\, India. He is also a senior faculty member of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition Teachers’ Training Program. \nStoma has been a licensed psychologist in private practice in St. Paul\, MN since 1985. He also served as Adjunct Assistant School Professor of Counseling and Psychological Services at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis\, MN. \nDr. Parker edited volume two of Swami Veda’s definitive scholarly work on the “Yoga-Sutras of Patanjali.” He is also the author of “Clearing the Path\, The Yoga Way to a Clear and Pleasant Mind: Yoga\, Neuroscience and Emotion”(2017) published by AHYMSA publishers. \nTo support the work of The Meditation Center and register you can donate here (suggested donation $15.00) for Thursday Satsang or make a general donation by clicking on the “donate” button on the “Support TMC” website page. \nOr donate through PayPal. \nNote: There is parking available for TMC visitors in the St. Boniface lot across the street from the Center.

His stated purpose in offering these seminars was to ensure that his students were well-informed on the practices of the tradition. Proceeds from these seminars helped fund the opening of the Himalayan Institute Hospital in Dehradun\, India. According to the HIHT website: \n“Swamiji started this project in 1989 with an outpatient clinic of only two rooms. The hospital at HIHT currently has 750 beds and is serving approximately 10 million people of Garhwal\, Kumaon and adjoining areas.” \nThe 1989 lectures were given at the Sheraton Hotel in Northbrook\, Illinois over the course of three days\, August 18-20. He offered many intriguing tips to refine our standard practices. But the primary focus was to present what he called ‘the monastery system’ of meditation\, with an emphasis on third chakra practice and solar science. \n“You don’t need to be still like a log – you are a living being!” – Swami Rama \nGary Gran has been treading the Himalayan path since the late 1970s. He was in attendance for the 1986\,1987 & 1989 Path of Fire & Light seminars\, and will be presenting a recollection of the 1989 teachings from his personal notes.  He has served the tradition in various capacities over the years beginning at the old Glenview center in Illinois.
