“Why Study the Yoga Sutras Anyway?”
An Evening with Stephen Parker (Stoma), PsyD
Stoma’s Monday night text seminar decided at the end of the last text (Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra) to come back to the Yoga Sutras where our journey together began 18 years ago (YIKES!). Stoma has often stated that one cannot return to the fundamentals too often and this is certainly true of this very deep and comprehensive text. Swami Veda went through the Sutras three times and each time he re-read his previous writings and lectures he would say, “Who was the idiot who wrote that?!” Each time there are new insights. This talk will discuss why this map of spiritual practice is so useful and some of the particularities of its study that many modern students miss. There is a particular traditional way of study that is critical to really getting to the sweet juice in this beautiful spiritual fruit. (Yoga Alliance CE credits will be available for anyone who needs them.)
