“August Full Moon Havan (Fire Ceremony) – August 19, 2024
In TMC’s Back Yard with Emilio Bettaglio
August Full Moon Havan
August 19, 2024
6:30—8:45 p.m
6:30-7:30 p.m. – Havan (Fire Ceremony)
7:30-8:45 p.m. – Soup and Socializing
9:00-10:00 p.m. – Global Full Moon Meditation
The fire havan is an in-person only event. It will not be zoomed.
The dried twigs brought to TMC on Guru Purnima will be offered to the fire tonight.
You can still bring a bundle of sticks tonight, the evening of the havan.
Some etiquette: The havan kunda, fire pit, is the shrine for the fire deity Agni and needs to be approached as such; having freshly cleansed, with an open heart and mind, and wearing clean clothes; no shoes close to the havan kunda. All offerings are made with the right hand and with a loving attitude of letting go and from the heart. Once seated for the ceremony, it’s important to remain there until the conclusion.
A Quote from Swami Rama
Best student is he who takes from the teacher—not he who gives. The scripture also tells you what you should give to your teacher. It is never said that you should give a large check, your entire bank balance. No! You give dry twigs—a bundle of dry twigs to your teacher. That’s the symbol that “I have nothing to give you. You don’t need anything for yourself. I know I cannot do anything for you. These dry twigs represent my karmas. There are some samskaras which are very hard on me, trouble me, torture me. Will you please burn them?” Has he got power to do this? Yes. But it’s not his power. He uses the power of the tradition to help the student. It’s not his power.”
These twigs are offered as food for Agni who will, on behalf of the Lineage and the Guru force, burn them and transmute what they represent into prayers.
In case you have not brought twigs to TMC and are interested in participating tonight, there is still time to bring them. Drop them off at TMC today or in person this evening Prior to offering them, Swami Radha will bless the twig bundles.
