Philosophy is a description of experience. When we have an experience we create a philosophy when we attempt to explain it to ourselves or others. The Indian culture and practices of introspection and rituals gave birth to a number of classical philosophies–each of which have slightly different flavors of meditation and contemplation. While the subject area is certainly vast it may be helpful to spend some time thinking about some of these areas as we develop our own philosophical explanations of meditation.
Within these five weeks we will spend some time with the Vedic, Samkhya-Yogic, Vedantic, Tantric, and possibly Bhaktic traditions, discussing the basic texts and attempting some of the key practices. .
