“The Poetry of Hindustani Song” with Matthew Rahaim
7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
We’ll warm up with breathing and resonance exercises that are part of my daily practice. Then we’ll work our way through just a line or two of a khyal — a classical song — with close attention to melodic nuance and poetry. All are welcome; the workshop will be conducted in English. No particular music or linguistic background necessary.
Matt is a teacher, performer, and student of Hindustani vocal music. He has trained in the Gwalior tradition for twenty years, first in Pune under Vikas Kashalkar, and lately under the guidance of his guru, L.K. Pandit, in Delhi. He also is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Minnesota, with affiliations in Religious Studies, Asian Languages/Literatures/Media, and Cultural Studies & Comparative Literature.
