“Cultivating Compassion:  Neuroscience, Quantum Physics, Yoga’s Four Functions of Mind, and You”

Part – I

with Jim Nelson

In a world of sensory bombardment, embedded with hedonist values, how can we maintain our spiritual center? How can we skillfully remove the blocks that limit the full experience and expression of our compassion and unconditional love? Psychologist and author Jim Nelson will first examine research on disconcerting trends; including exploding numbers of people who struggle with depression, anxiety, borderline personalities, and profound loneliness. What has changed that has led to this malaise? How can we counter-balance these trends? Insights from yoga science on the critical importance of coordinating our four functions of mind, and valuable discoveries in Neuroscience and Quantum Physics will be explored. The two consecutive Thursday’s (June 6th and June 13th) will include discussion, efficacious yoga practices, and deeply engaging videos.

Jim Nelson graduated Magna Cum Laude in psychology from the University of Minnesota where he served as President of the Honors Student Council and Teaching Assistant to the Vice President. After receiving his psychologist license, he taught psychology for over thirty years and worked at Transition Plus—a school for at-risk youth.  He was a Consulting Psychologist at Family Life Mental Health Center, while serving on Anoka County Mental health advisory board. Jim is the recipient of Medtronics Outstanding Teacher Award and a member of the Who’s Who of American teachers. He is the author of:  Running on Empty:  Transcending the Economic Culture’s Seduction of our Youth.  Jim has taught meditation at the Meditation Center in Minneapolis for forty years. He travels across the country teaching meditation, speaking at Mental Health conferences, and facilitating silence retreats.
