“Gathas” are part of the Buddhist monastic tradition as experienced by Thich Nhat Hanh and are found in his book,

“PRESENT MOMENT, WONDERFUL MOMENT: MINDFULNESS VERSES FOR DAILY LIVING.”

“Gatha”s are positive affirmations, meant to encourage mindfulness, gratitude, compassion and joy.  Here are the first three:

1. Waking in the morning I smile.
Twenty-four hours brand new hours are before me.
I vow to live fully in each moment
And to look at all beings with eyes of compassion.

2. Walking on the earth is a miracle.
Each mindful step
reveals the wondrous Dharmakaya.

3. Opening the window,
I look out into the Dharmakaya.
How wondrous is life!
Attentive to each moment,
My mind is clear like a calm river.

What is the Dharmakaya?
The Dharmakaya at a superficial level is the body (kaya) of the Buddha’s teachings
(dharma): the way of understanding and love.
At its deepest level the Dharmakaya is the ground of Being unfolding into the
manifest universe of mountains and valleys, rivers and forests, the sky, clouds, sun,
moon and stars.  Dharmakaya is the essence of all that exists, all phenomena – the
song of a bird, the warm rays of the sun, a cup of hot tea.   Thich Nhat Hahn says,

“Walking on the earth is a miracle, but the real miracle is to be awake in the present moment.”

In this sense, it’s exactly what Eckhart Tolle is saying in his book, A NEW EARTH, when he explains these quotes from the Bible:

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth,
and the former shall not be remembered, nor come to mind.”(Isaiah 65:17)

“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven
and the old earth had passed away.” (Revelations 21:1)

“We need to understand here that heaven is not a location but refers to the inner realm
of consciousness.   This is the esoteric meaning of the word, and this is also its
meaning in the teachings of Jesus.  Earth, on the other hand, is the outer manifestation
in form, which is always a reflection of the inner.  Collective human consciousness
and life on our planet are intrinsically connected. “A new heaven”  is the emergence of
a transformed state of human consciousness, and “a new earth” is the reflection in the physical realm.

“God-in-man makes all things new.  When man realizes the Christ Spirit
within, everything changes for him.  For then he begins to see beauty instead of
ugliness, love instead of hate; to realize health instead of sickness.  The world
becomes fresh and new, as when after rain you can look out on an earth washed
clean – and shining with the sunlight.” (White Eagle, 3.8)
