Swami Rama once remarked that the key to understanding a person is “the breath”. In yoga the breath is both the physical process of respiration as well as the more subtle workings of prana–the life force. These next 4 weeks will examine “breath” from both these viewpoints particularly looking at the neuroscientific underpinnings of pranayama. We will start with the anatomy and mechanics of breathing, continuing to exercise physiology and the various neurological effects of particular practices. Along the way we will also discuss parts of some of the various sanskrit texts which allude to breathing and pranayama.
